Kalimantan / Borneo Island


Kalimantan Island
Kalimantan / Borneo is the third largest island in the world. The island is divided into 3 areas of the country namely Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The island is also known Island Thousand Rivers. An area of 743,330 km2 with a population of about 16 million people.
Kalimantan island is surrounded by the South China Sea to the West and North-West, the Sulu sea in the North-East, the Celebes Sea and Makassar Strait to the East as well as the Java Sea and Karimata Strait to the South.
On the island of Kalimantan, namely: there are 4 Province of West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan.


Populations

Suku Dayak

Indigenous people who inhabit the island of Borneo's Dayak. The word comes from the word Dayak Power which means River. Most dayak diverse Christians (Catholics and Protestants), but some are Muslim, but it is more often called Banjar people who inhabit around the province of South Kalimantan. This uses a variety of tribal language area, for example, Greater Barito languages, Dayak West, North Borneo, and others.





Economy

Economy is predicated on the island of Borneo on the natural resources of the island. Particularly in the mining sector. The island has a lot of petroleum mining area (Balikpapan, East Kalimantan); coal (Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan); even diamonds (Martapura, South Kalimantan). In addition to the mining sector, the island of Borneo is also the largest timber in Indonesia, because of the vast forests of Borneo. But the last couple of years, forests in Borneo hold shrunk due to rampant illegal logging. There are also other causes such as the opening of forest land for the Palm Gardens by some Palm oil company on the island.

Because the majority of inhabited island of Kalimantan dayak, so not too many diverse cultures. Some cultures coming from Kalimantan was the original of the dayak, the example on the dance area is pretty well known from the island of Kalimantan is the Dance, this dance is Manasai dance that symbolises joy. There's also the usual dance Hudoq performed as a ritual after planting which comes from the Dayak Bahau and Modang Dayak. Dayak also have traditional weapons that is believed to have supernatural powers or ability levels i.e. MandauWeapons used in rituals of indigenous Dayak traditions such as pengayauan (beheading an opponent). There is also a self defense tool, 
Talawang from enemy attacks. Its elongated Hexagon with the size of the length of the Gorge is 1 meter and width of approximately 0.5 meters.

Soto Banjar
 In addition to the dance and traditional weapons, Kalimantan certainly have a lot of food typical of the area of Kalimantan, for example Soto Banjar (South Kalimantan), Ca Kwe (West Kalimantan), Tangkiling (Central Kalimantan), and others.





Transportations

This island called pulau seribu sungai, because on the island there are indeed many major rivers, including the Kapuas River (longest in Indonesia), Mahakam River, and the River Barito. Of course it makes the main transportation on the island is air transport. In fact, in some areas there is a floating market, namely the market that its activity is carried out over the course with the help of the boat. On the island of Kalimantan, there are a lot of great bridge that connects interstate to go through major rivers there, for example just a collapsed bridge kutai kartanegara several months ago. The bridge crosses the River, Mahakam bridge along 500 meters it connects with the city of Tenggarong and Tenggarong Seberang.
